The Manual is edited by the Group CARE (Communication Reception Compared Empathy) Rehabilitation: a multidisciplinary and multiprofessional team composed of experts in rehabilitation and communication. It addresses all health professionals who want to improve communication with the patient and family in all its forms.The Manual was born in the form of guidelines for rehabilitation professionals (doctors, physiatrists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, educators, neuro- and psycho-motor developmental staff, speech therapists, orthotics, and others). It allows operators to self-evaluate their communication skills, understand the benefits of an effective relationship with patients and their families and to consider the rehabilitation process as a tool for "re-socialization" of the patient in psycho-physical, spiritual and social domains. The different moments of the communicative relationship with the patient, the family and the team are detailed and addressed with recommendations, good practice examples and updated communication and counseling strategies in order to enable a self-assessment of skills necessary to establish a proper interpersonal relationship.The document is composed of two parts: the first provides checklists of key issues in communication; the second includes a series of reports on specific aspects of communication in the rehabilitation field. This Manual follows the previous Rapporti ISTISAN 07/38 on evaluation of oncology communication.
