Animal assisted activities and therapies in Italy. State of the art, perspectives and proposed guidelines.
Edited by Francesca Cirulli, Nadia Francia and Enrico Alleva
2010, 58 p. (in Italian)

On November 18 and 19, 2009 the Section of Behavioural Neuroscience (Department of Cell Biology and Neurosciences) of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (National Institute of Health in Italy), has organized the second edition of the Course Terapie e Attività Assistite in Italia: attualità, prospettive e proposta di linee guida. The aim of this initiative has been to give up-to date information on animal assisted activities and therapies in Italy. More in detail, a great emphasis has been placed on instructing participants on good practises and methodological details required to reach the scientific standards needed to organize such activities. This is particularly important, given the current lack of an ad hoc legislation on these practises. Ethical issues were discussed as well as guidelines to ensure health and welfare of all subjects participating in these programs.
Key words: Pet therapy, Human health, Animal welfare, Zoo-anthropology, Guidelines
