Since the first riots took place in Tunisia in December 2010, popular protests have profoundly changed the political structure of many southern Mediterranean countries and promoted processes of democratization and constitutional reform. One consequence of this political instability and of the reduction of border controls in affected countries has been an increase in immigration flows to southern Europe (particularly affecting Italy, Malta and Greece) and population movements between Egypt, Tunisia and Libya. This report presents the Italian experience in the use of a syndromic surveillance system designed to provide early warnings of potential public health emergencies occurring in immigrant reception centres in the context of this geopolitical crisis. The purpose of this publication is to provide public health officers with all the information necessary to reactivate this surveillance system should it be required and/or inform the development of future syndromic surveillance systems that might be developed at national or regional level in response to emerging public health needs.
