The “Lisbon Strategy” aims at making the European Union the most dynamic and competitive knowledge-based economy and the building the European Research Area (ERA) represents one of its fundamental elements. The launch of the 7th framework program, specifically conceived to support the creation of ERA, is a unique opportunity, even for Italy. From this point of view the need of harmonization to promote an active and effective participation in the creation of the ERA is evident. The meeting “Building the European Research Area in biomedicine and the contribution of the research institutions of the National Health Service: to promote excellence and support harmonization – a priority for the Country”, held at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (the National Institute of Health in Italy) on June 25, 2007, aimed at stimulating a dialogue between ministries and research institutions concerning the methodologies to be realized in order to allow the country to participate, in a satisfactory way, in the European initiatives.
