Legislation and care of experimental animals: present situation and future perspectives.
Arianna Manciocco, Augusto Vitale
2007, 25 p. (in Italian)
Animal experimentation has always been a matter of both scientific and ethic debate. Nowadays, the ethical standard for the regulation of animal experimentation is provided by the principles of the “3Rs” model. These principles are involved in guidelines, codes of practice and laws. In Europe the animals housed in biomedical laboratories are protected by the European Directive 86/609/EEC. The provisions of this Directive cover both areas such as conduct of experiments and care and animal housing. In the 1992, Italy adopted this regulation, partially modified, with the Law 116/1992. Today, these laws are currently under revision. In fact, new findings in animal welfare science and in the development of alternative methods must inspire improvements in the related legislations and must make them more comprehensive.
