Influenza is an acute respiratory illness. It occurs all over the world and causes considerable morbility and mortality every year. Vaccination is one of the main influenza prevention methods. Due to the constantly changing composition of the circulating influenza viruses, the influenza vaccine must be modified each year to match the current viruses. For this reason, WHO created an international network of National Influenza Centres working together with the four WHO Collaborating Centres for Reference and Research on Influenza (Atlanta, London, Melbourne, Tokyo). This network helps to monitor influenza activity all over the world, it allows the timely identification of variant emerging in the interpandemic period and provides an antigenic and molecular evaluation of the variability degree of the influenza viruses circulating world-wide. This report shows the results of the virological surveillance carried out by the National Influenza Centre (NIC), during the 2005-2006 influenza season. The report also describes a summary of data discussed during the WHO February meeting, which led to the definition of the influenza vaccine composition for 2006-2007 season.
