The EIPA project is a perspective, observational study (on a voluntary basis) of the outcome of hip arthroplasty 6 months after surgery. All 689 Italian hospitals featuring orthopaedics and trauma units were asked to participate in the project by filling in a recruitment form. The data collected until 06/05/2004, regarding 4.753 surgical operations – and 2.055 related 6 month follow-ups – performed in 122 clinical units, have been inserted in a dedicated website. The outcomes chosen for the analysis were: 30 days survival after surgery, onset of complications, patient’s dis/satisfaction and motor dis/ability after 6 months. Based on an a priori evaluation of the risk for each patient to experience the worst case possible for each outcome, a procedure was defined to evaluate every clinical unit on an outcome basis. Therefore, the short-term evaluation of hip arthroplasty outcomes appears feasible.
