Marina Torre, Gemma Calamandrei, Maria Orlando
2002, iii, 33 p. Rapporti ISTISAN 02/5 (in Italian)
This report is a gender-oriented description of the human resources of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (Italian National Institute of Health), and focuses on women's careers and incidence in research managerial bodies. The analysis accounts for several factors such as age, length of service, educational qualification. Underemployed and temporary workers are analysed separately. The results show that women are 54% of the permanent personnel (40% in the scientific-technical component, 14 % in the administrative component). On average, women are younger than men (45 vs 47.6 years) and with a higher educational level (they are 60% of university degree holders and 53% of secondary school diploma holders). Nevertheless, upon examining female presence in top career positions, proportions invert: women constitute 68% of researchers/"technologists and 58% of senior researchers/senior technologists", but only 34% of them are research directors/director
technologists
. As for managerial positions, 47% of section directors, 25% of laboratory directors and 40% of administrative unit directors are women, but neither the Administrative Council nor the Scientific or the Audit Committees have women as members.
