In the first phase of the National Mental Health Project (NMHP) of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (Italian National Institute of Health), 27 research projects have been funded. Of these, 25 have also been funded for the second year. Moreover, 22 new projects have been approved in the second phase. The projects supported by the NMHP cover many research topics identified in the 'National Health Plan 1998-2000' and in the accompanying 'Mental Health Target Plan 1998-2000'. The NMHP coordinating unit has also promoted three multicentre projects of special public health importance: a national study of non-hospital psychiatric residential facilities, a prevalence study of child abuse and neglect performed in Pediatric Emergency Rooms of 12 hospitals, and the Italian section of the 'European Study on the Epidemiology of Mental Disorders' (ESEMED). About 100 university departments and mental health services in Italy have been involved in the NMHP. By March 2001, the research groups supported by the NMHP had published 56 articles in English, 6 articles in Spanish, 45 articles in Italian, 11 books or manuals in Italian, 2 book chapters in English, and 9 book chapters in Italian. Many new or translated assessment instruments have also been developed in the framework of the NMHP. Finally, the NMHP central coordinating unit has run 27 workshops, courses and seminars focusing on psychiatric epidemiology, evidence-based mental health and health services research.
