Contamination of surface and groundwaters by unproperly discharged sewages is responsible of the spreading of microorganisms harmful for environment and man. The Italian normative on waste water quality dating back to the '70ies it was recently updated, including the EEC Directive 91/271 on sewage, within the Italian Legislative Decree no. 152 of May 11, 1999. Scientific data on environmental and sanitary impact of unproper disposals are limited. The aim of this report is to collect different topics discussed in a workshop held at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (October 26-27, 1998). The report includes various arguments on pollution sources, their effects on territory, microbiological quality of surface and groundwaters, microbiological contamination of vegetables. Methodological and sampling aspects concerning water and bioaerosol as well as the possible effects on sewage treatment plant operators are also treated.
