In the first phase of the National Mental Health Project (NMHP) of the Italian National Institute of Health, 27 research projects have been funded. Of these, 25 have also been funded for the second year. Moreover, 22 new projects, solicited by the Scientific Committee of the NMHP, have been approved in the second wave. All these projects cover many research topics identified in the 'National Health Plan 1998-2000' and in the 'Mental Health Target Plan 1998-2000'. More than 100 university departments and mental health services in the country have been involved in the NMHP. By June 1999, 17 articles had been published and other 21 were in press. Three manuals were published and three are in press. Several new or translated assessment instruments have also been developed in the framework of the project. The NMHP central coordinating unit has run 15 courses and seminars focusing on psychiatric epidemiology, evidence-based mental health and evaluation of mental health services. The NMHP coordinating unit has also promoted three new multicentre projects of special public health relevance. The first is a national study of non-hospital psychiatric residential facilities, the second is a prevalence study of child abuse and neglect cases identified in the Paediatric Emergency Rooms of 18 hospitals. Finally, the NMHP coordinating unit is the Italian Collaborating Centre of the 'European Study on the Epidemiology of Mental Disorders' (ESEMED), a large international prevalence study of mental disorders in the general population.
