In Italy 150,863 legally induced abortion were notified in 1993 and 142,657 in 1994 (-39% against 1982, year with the maximum value). The abortion rate was 10.5 in 1993 and 9.9 in 1994, while the abortion ratio decreased from 273.0 in 1993 to 270.5 in 1994 . Illegal abortion has been estimated to have declined from 100,000 in 1983 to 45,000 in 1994. Women who sought legal abortion were mainly 25-34 years old, married, with children. 26% of the abortions in 1994 were obtained by women who had a previous abortion: this value is less than that estimated mathematically (42%). 49% of the abortions were performed within 8 weeks of gestation, 88% in hospital, 83% by vacuum aspiration, 80% under general anaestesia and 76% without overnight stay. Immediate complications were rare (0.3%). 46% of the certificates stating the gestational age and the reason for abortion were provided by private gynaecologists and 23% were issued through the governmental maternal and child services (consultori). In 1994, 58% of gynaecologists, 47% of anaesthesists and 38% of health workers were registered as coscientious objectors to induced abortion. 8% of women had an abortion in a region outside their residence.
