The scientific rationale behind the survey regards the potential toxicity of aluminium, long considered as a chemical element free from toxic effects. In contrast with the development of specific clinical problems related to some pathological aspects of aluminium in renal dialysis, the research in the toxicological and environmental fields is still poor and fragmentary. On the other hand, its chemical nature allows aluminium to easily bind with several structures of living organisms, following a dynamics which is almost unknown. Within the different environmental compartments, aluminium concentrations vary widely, depending on geological aspects and its mobility towards plants and the aquatic environment, closely correlated with the solubility of its chemical forms. The wide spread use of aluminium in the industry poses the risk of its potential intake by man through different routes, which involves a series of toxicological aspects calling for control and prevention, especially as regards occupational exposure. A survey was carried out in an industrial area of Portovesme (Sardinia) in two distinct periods. The determination of aluminium was performed on ninety samples of serum and urine by means of graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. The results showed that the mean levels obtained are comparable with those of a non-exposed population; 81% of our values were below the upper limit of a reference population.
