Interventional Radiology (IR) has been widespread in recent years, because frequently it allows reducing the risk to the patient and the cost of surgery. However, these techniques can result in high doses to patients and staff. Within the project “Problems related to patient and worker exposures to ionizing radiation in Interventional Radiology” (funded by the Ministry of Health) a methodology for the collection of information related to radioprotection was developed at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (the National Institute of Health in Italy), involving a representative sample of Italian IR centres. The ultimate goal is to formulate a set of recommendations to ensure a higher level of optimization of radiation protection in IR.
