Drug consumption during pregnancy is a matter of concern, especially regarding drugs at risk or teratogens. The present study aimed at analyzing drug use patterns in pregnancy performing two different methodologies: a cross-sectional population study and a sample survey carried out in three birth centers in Latium. The population study included 189.923 women, 81% of which received at least one prescription during pregnancy. Among potential teratogens, ACE inhibitors/sartans were prescribed in 0.3% of pregnancies. Inappropriate drugs most frequently prescribed are progesterone for miscarriage treatment (19%) and glicocorticoids for systemic use (2.3%). Among 562 women respondents to sample survey 91% have taken at least a drug during pregnancy. Intake of folic acid was appropriate only for 19% of the sample. In Latium the drug assumption during pregnancy is widespread. Prescriptions clinically inappropriate or at teratogenic risk are very small but not entirely absent, therefore it is appropriate to update health care professionals on critical prescriptions highlighted in the study.
