The report collects the analyses based on the 2013 Health Survey carried out by ISTAT with reference to health conditions, prevention, health care and further focuses on vulnerable groups. Thanks to the availability of comparable data from the previous waves of the survey, it has been possible to evaluate the time trends in some indicators across the economic downturn. Despite the recession, perceived health status, physical health and disability seem to be improving, while mental distress has increased particularly among young and adults, especially for males, who are the most affected by the unemployment crisis. Concerning prevention, unhealthy lifestyles, such as smoking, being overweight, physical inactivity, are still different among social groups and geographical areas. Inequalities in accessing other forms of prevention, such as screenings for women’s cancers, have decreased due to improved local screening programs in southern areas. As regards health care, the study suggests some new approaches to better understand why the supply doesn’t match the demand, what are the factors leading to use private services and in some cases to unmet needs for health care. There are long waiting lists for persons with social disadvantage, who have lower resources and reduced competence in finding suitable health care services when they need them.
Key words: Perceived health; Prevention; Risk factors for health; Women’s cancers screening; Unmet needs for health care; Waiting lists for care; Inequalities in health care
