The Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental disorders with complex etiopathogenesis and the early identification is crucial in order to improve outcomes and prevent secondary neurodevelopmental disturbances. Paediatricians play an important role in early recognition of ASD, because they usually are the first point of contact for parents. Some studies are available to support the important role of these professionals. It is important that paediatricians be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of ASD and have a strategy for assessing them systematically. Paediatricians also must be aware of local resources that can assist in making a definitive diagnosis, and in managing ASD and adopt tools able to monitor neurobehavioral development.
