Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental disorders with a complex etiopathogenesis. Consensus at international level is stated on the importance of early identification as it is critical in order to improve outcomes and prevent secondary neurodevelopmental disturbances. Paediatricians play an important role in early recognition of autism spectrum disorders, because they usually are the first point of contact for parents. Furthermore paediatricians manage the first reactions of parents to the communication of diagnosis. Providing appropriate instruction about counselling can improve both child and family outcomes also in the managing of morbility often associate with ASD such as sleep disturbances, gastrointestinal problems, epilepsy psychological disturbances. Recent evidences have led to clinical pathways to evaluate and address these issues within the context of primary care. By being aware of and disseminating these research findings, academic paediatricians can help future and current clinicians improve the care of children with ASD.
