The study of the relationship between physico-chemical composition and potential toxicity is crucial in the risk assessment of nanomaterials, due to their specific properties linked to their small dimensions (<100 nm). The Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials of the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) proposed a list of endpoints as well as a list of alternative methods, which have to be used in the evaluation of safety, for human health and environment, of nanomaterials. In this study, validated and/or alternative methods were used in order to evaluate the physico-chemical properties and the geno/cytotoxic potential of titanium dioxide particles, both in micro and in nano size. Obtained results allowed us to implement the methodologies tested in order to answer to some requirements of European regulations (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) and CLP (Classification, Labelling and Packaging), related to their application to substances in nanoform.
