Invasive neonatal group B streptococcus infections in Italy.
Edited by Roberta Creti
2011, ii, 69 p. (in Italian)
The first national polycentric study (years 2007-2010) on the invasive neonatal group B streptococcus (GBS) infections has been pursued by the collaboration between the Department of Infectious, Parasitic and Immunomediated Diseases of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (National Institute of Health in Italy) and Italian Ministry of Health. The study dealt with the description of prevention programs, the incidence of the invasive neonatal GBS infections and the serotypes distribution in disease and maternal carriage. This volume comprises a final report on the clinical and microbiological data as well as contributions by the participating hospitals on emerging aspects. The more important issues for the prevention of the invasive neonatal GBS infections as well as of maternal and neonatal welfare are the compliance with the common recommendations concerning the maternal prenatal microbiological screening, the intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis and the diagnostic microbiological protocols.
