Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a leading cause of virus-associated cancers of anogenital, oropharyngeal and cutaneous epithelium. The most prevalent of these cancers is the cervical one, the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths in women worldwide. Screening for cervical cancer is accomplished utilising a Pap smear and pelvic exam. While this technology is widely available and has reduced cervical cancer incidence in industrialized nations, it is not readily available in third world countries where the cervical cancer incidence and mortality remain high. Cervical cancer association with infection with “high risk” HPV types has created a unique opportunity to develop new diagnostic technologies for the detection of the virus and to prevent or treat cervical cancer through anti-viral vaccination strategies. In this meeting the advantages of these new strategies, how to correlate them to those available and their effects on public health have been discussed.
