Based on analyses of various types of rubber granulates used in synthetic-turf fields, the following substances were found of major concern due to toxicity and content: benzopyrene (BaP) and other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzodioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and zinc (Zn). In this Report three methods are described to determine these substances in rubber granulates. The methods are suitable to check compliance with the chemical parameters reported in the legislation currently in preparation on synthetic-turf sport fields. The instrumental analysis is carried out by HRGC-LRMS for PAHs and PCBs, HRGC-HRMS for PCDDs and PCDFs, and HR- or LR-ICP-MS for Zn. For each method, examples of instrumental operating conditions are detailed and a quality assurance programme is given. As to PAHs and Zn, the performances obtained by the in-house validation of methods are also reported.
