Influenza is one of the oldest and most common diseases known to man. Every year, the World Health Organization (WHO) brings together international influenza experts to decide the composition of the influenza vaccine for the incoming winter. The influenza surveillance system is based on reports from National Influenza Centres, scattered throughout the world, to WHO. The network activity allows the timely identification of viral variants emerging in the interpandemic period and provides an antigenic and molecular evaluation of the variability degree of the influenza viruses circulating world-wide. This report is a summary of the virological data discussed during the WHO February meeting held in Geneva that led to the definition of the influenza vaccine composition for 2002-2003 season. During the meeting, experts considered the recent isolation of a new subtype of influenza A, A/H1N2, too.
