The Italian National Institute of Health was also aboard the training ship Amerigo Vespucci when it rounded Cape Horn for the first time in April 2024. As part of the Sea Care project, two young researchers — Giorgia Mattei from the ISS and Lorenza Notargiacomo from Sapienza University — were aboard with the aim of collecting water samples in the area. This was a challenging task given the often-adverse environmental conditions. The project's ambition is to create a national research model to explore the complex scenarios of the oceans in a harmonized, holistic and economically sustainable manner.
