The European Union has adopted a regulatory framework on GMOs that is adequate to ensure the necessary levels of safety for the environment and human health as required by the Cartagena Protocol.
In the European Union, genetically modified organisms are authorised for deliberate release into the environment for experimental and commercial purposes only after passing a rigorous risk assessment procedure in accordance with the principles and methodology set out in Directive 2001/18/EC (consolidated text as of 2021), in order to avoid any unintended or undesirable, direct or indirect, adverse effects on the environment and human health. The Ministry for Ecological Transition is the competent authority responsible for implementing the provisions of Directive 2001/18/EC.
