Back What can I do to protect others?

Following a STEC infection, pathogen shedding through faeces can persist for an extended period (sometimes even several months), even in the absence of symptoms. This situation poses a potential risk of transmission to others, particularly in the case of close interpersonal contact, including within households (e.g., parental care of young children). Special attention should be given in environments such as:

  • Childcare and educational settings (nurseries, kindergartens);
  • Healthcare and long-term care facilities.

If you test positive for an STEC infection or experience compatible symptoms, follow the instructions provided by your general practitioner, paediatrician, or local health authority (ASL).
If you have gastrointestinal symptoms or have recently recovered from gastroenteritis, stay at home instead of working (according to the recommendations of your doctor or ASL) and pay special attention to personal hygiene, particularly if you are employed in healthcare, long-term care, or the food service sector (restaurants, bars, cafeterias, catering facilities).
