Sea Care Milestones, Year by Year

2022

North Atlantic Campaign Caio Duilio Ship = The Sea Care Project's inaugural campaign, the North Atlantic Campaign, commenced in May 2022. During this expedition, two researchers crossed the Atlantic Ocean for the first time aboard the Caio Duilio, traveling from Rota, Spain, to Norfolk, USA. They collected water samples at five different sites along the route and tested sampling procedures for the first time.

Training ship Vespucci Mediterranean Tour Campaign = From June to September 2022, the Vespucci Mediterranean Tour Campaign took place aboard the Amerigo Vespucci vessel. Seventeen researchers sailed across the entire Mediterranean Sea, collecting water samples at 25 sites to support the project's objectives.

Alliance High North 2022 Ship Campaign = In July 2022, the Alliance High North 2022 Ship Campaign conducted sampling around the Svalbard Islands. An Italian Navy oceanographic vessel, the Alliance, facilitated the collection of water samples at five locations in this remote Arctic region.

Paolo Thaon di Revel Ship Campaign Red Sea and Persian Gulf = Between November 2022 and January 2023, the Paolo Thaon di Revel Ship Campaign focused on the Red Sea and Persian Gulf. Four researchers collected water samples at eight sites aboard the ship, contributing valuable data from these strategic maritime areas.

2023

The Amerigo Vespucci's world tour took it across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. After a lengthy technical stopover, the ship resumed the second leg of its journey in March 2024, setting sail from Buenos Aires and visiting the coasts of three oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian. From the beginning, researchers from the Sea Care project were onboard, collecting environmental samples along a route that included Argentina, Chile, Peru, Panama, Japan, the Philippines, Australia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, and India. Throughout the voyage, eight scientists alternated in conducting sampling at 21 different sites.

Raimondo Montecuccoli Ship World Tour: In April 2024, the Sea Care project embarked on another significant mission, this time aboard the Raimondo Montecuccoli. During the journey, five researchers rotated on board, collecting samples at 17 different sites along the route. The voyage began in Italy, crossed the Atlantic to Miami, and continued through Panama, Mexico, California, Hawaii, Japan, and finally South Korea.

The Amerigo Vespucci ship tours the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. After a long technical stopover, the ship resumed the second part of its world tour in March 2024, setting sail from Buenos Aires and touching the coasts of three oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian. From the outset, researchers from the Sea Care project were on board, collecting environmental samples along a route that took in Argentina, Chile, Peru, Panama, Japan, the Philippines, Australia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and India. During the voyage, eight scientists took turns taking samples at 21 sites.

Raimondo Montecuccoli Ship World Tour: Another important mission for the Sea Care project set sail in April 2024, this time aboard the Raimondo Montecuccoli ship. Five researchers took turns collecting samples at 17 sites along the route during the voyage, which began in Italy, crossed the Atlantic to Miami and continued on to Panama, Mexico, California, Hawaii, Japan and finally South Korea.

2025

The Amerigo Vespucci Ship in the Giro d'Italia - After completing its round-the-world voyage in February 2025, the Amerigo Vespucci ship immediately set sail again for a new campaign around Italy. The Sea Care Project was once again on board the training ship, with six researchers collecting water samples from 16 different sites in the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian Seas.

Amerigo Vespucci rounded Cape Horn for the first time in 2024, with two young ISS researchers on board

The Italian National Institute of Health was also aboard the training ship Amerigo Vespucci when it rounded Cape Horn for the first time in April 2024. As part of the Sea Care project, two young researchers — Giorgia Mattei from the ISS and Lorenza Notargiacomo from Sapienza University — were aboard with the aim of collecting water samples in the area. This was a challenging task given the often-adverse environmental conditions. The project's ambition is to create a national research model to explore the complex scenarios of the oceans in a harmonized, holistic and economically sustainable manner.
