The challenge of complexity in the big data era: strategy and tactic for a multidisciplinary approach to the Istituto Superiore di Sanità - the National Institute of Health in Italy
We need to integrate different scientific viewpoints to overcome the lack of true innovation as for basic science, being today’s research only focused on technological progress. This integration process is becoming a reality in several scientific fields. The multidisciplinary approach to solving complex problems is at the base of the very existence of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, where physicians and biologists work together on statistical epidemiology and multidimensional data analysis, as well as physicists participating in neuroscience projects. From this multidisciplinary reality in both birth and development, comes this transversal and multidisciplinary working group: ISS Complex Systems and Data Science Group.
Improving the access to vaccination for newly arrived migrants: Project AcToVx4NAM
Access to Vaccination for Newly Arrived Migrants (AcToVx4NAM) is a 3-year European project with a mission to increase the vaccination uptake in Newly Arrived Migrants (NAMs). The beneficiaries are NAMs in first line transit and destination EU/EEA countries, regardless of their legal status. The AcToVax4ΝΑΜ consortium aims to improve the health system’s vaccination literacy and access and thereby vaccination uptake for NAMs, making access conditions more equal and guaranteed. The project targets Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPDs) included within the Vaccination National Plans throughout the entire life course and adopts a participatory approach.
Bringing citizens closer to science through Health Humanities
Bringing citizens closer to science to illustrate its significant role in society and its relevance in everyday life is fundamental for a more active and aware citizenship education. As part of the scientific collaboration agreement between ISS (the National Institute of Health in Italy) and the University of Catania, Health Humanities were protagonists in Rome and Catania to celebrate the European Researchers’ Night (ERN) dedicated to research, an initiative of the European Commission that aims to spread knowledge of the results of scientific research among civil society. A multidisciplinary research team referring to ISS Laboratory organized both communication activities to respond to the curiosity of the general public on research methods that integrate science and art, and interventions in schools on specific topics such as the relationship between climate change, brain development and health.
