Abstract:
HIV/AIDS in Italy up to December 31, 2023
Data on new HIV diagnoses have a national coverage since 2012. In 2023, 2,349 new HIV diagnoses were reported, with an incidence of 4.0 per 100,000 residents, lower compared to that reported in Western European countries and the European Union (6.2 new diagnoses per 100,000). Since 2012, the highest number of diagnoses is attributable to sexual transmission. In 2023 heterosexual transmission accounted for 47.7% (26.6% in males, 21.1% in females) of reported diagnoses, sex between men accounted for 38.6%, and injecting drug use accounted for 3.4%. Data on AIDS cases are collected since 1982. In 2023, 532 AIDS diagnoses were reported, with an incidence of 0.9 per 100,000 residents. An increase in the number of AIDS cases is observed in 2023 compared to 2022; 84.1% of these individuals discovered being HIV-infected in the six months prior to AIDS diagnosis.
