Patients associations represent an important resource for the patient community, expecially in the field of rare disease.

They offer support to sick persons and their families, by sharing experiences and good practices, and help in bridging a number of specific information gaps, starting from a common denominator.

These associations promote the self-awareness and self-determination, essential features for rare diseases; furthermore, they offer a knowledge and experience base, different and complementary to the medical and/or institutional one, useful to stimulate scientific research, actions and socio-sanitary interventions

Fra le varie iniziative svolte al fianco e per le Associazioni di Pazienti, il Centro Nazionale Malattie Rare dell’Istituto Superiore di Sanità, diretto dalla dottoressa Domenica Taruscio, promuove da qualche anno gli Open day sulle Malattie Rare. Questi incontri hanno lo scopo di offrire uno spazio di dialogo e confronto su tematiche emergenti relative alle malattie rare, o più in generale su condizione complesse e/o disabilità. Ogni Open day promuove argomenti, iniziative e/o approfondimenti sempre diversi e suggeriti spesso dalle stesse associazioni.
