June 2026 - World Blood Donor Day

On June 14, World Blood Donor Day is celebrated worldwide. The day was established by the World Health Organization to thank voluntary blood donors and raise awareness about the importance of blood donation in saving lives. The occasion represents an opportunity to promote solidarity and encourage broader and more regular participation in blood donation.
The main goal of the day is to highlight the fundamental role of safe and voluntary blood donations in healthcare systems around the world. Donated blood is essential for surgeries, emergencies, cancer treatments, transfusions, and the treatment of many chronic diseases. According to the WHO, ensuring sufficient and safe blood supplies is a global health priority. The day also emphasizes the importance of regular and unpaid donation, considered the safest and most effective way to guarantee a constant supply of blood and plasma. Through awareness campaigns and public events, values such as altruism, social responsibility, and active participation in protecting public health are promoted.
In recent years, many campaigns have focused especially on involving young people, making them aware that a single gesture can make a real difference in saving lives. Blood donation is also presented as a simple and safe act, carried out under strict medical supervision. At the international level, the WHO organizes initiatives, informational materials, and digital campaigns dedicated to the day, available on the official website. In Italy as well, associations and healthcare institutions take part through events, special blood drives, and awareness activities aimed at citizens, with the goal of spreading a stronger culture of donation. World Blood Donor Day therefore represents an important moment to recognize the value of voluntary donors and to remember how a small gesture can have a fundamental impact on the lives of many people.
