May 2026 - World Hand Hygiene Day

On May 5, World Hand Hygiene Day is celebrated worldwide, promoted by the World Health Organization. The initiative aims to raise awareness among governments, healthcare facilities, and citizens about the importance of proper hand hygiene as an essential tool to prevent infections and protect public health.

The central theme of the day is safety in healthcare settings, with particular attention to protecting patients and healthcare workers. According to the WHO, proper hand hygiene can significantly reduce the spread of healthcare-associated infections, which are still among the leading causes of complications in hospitals worldwide. Through the global campaign “SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands,” updated guidelines, practical tools, and informational materials are shared to improve daily practices.

An increasingly important aspect concerns the training and empowerment of healthcare personnel, as well as the direct involvement of patients. Promoting a shared culture of prevention means encouraging correct behaviours at all levels, from facility management to the everyday actions of individuals.

In recent years, also because of the COVID-19 pandemic, attention to hand hygiene has extended beyond hospital settings, becoming a fundamental practice in daily life. Washing hands properly and frequently is now recognized as one of the simplest and most effective ways to limit the spread of viruses and bacteria. At the international level, the WHO organizes events, webinars, and digital campaigns accessible through its official website.

The day therefore represents an important opportunity to remember that health also depends on simple but essential actions, capable of making a real difference in both individual and collective protection.
