Analytical methods

Accredited test methods with fixed scope of accreditation

  • identification of O157, O145, O111, O103, O26 serogroups of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli isolated strains through serum agglutination (LNRVTEC08.0n internal method)

Accredited test methods with flexible scope of accreditation

  • detection of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) and identification of O157, O145, O111, O103, O26 serogroups - Screening method (LNRVTEC29.0n internal  method)
  • detection, isolation and confirmation of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) isolates by amplification of the virulence genes (LNRVTEC09.0n internal method)
  • horizontal method for the detection of Shiga toxin producing Escherichia coli (STEC), including E. coli producing Stx2f and the determination of the O157, O111, O26, O103 and O145 serogroups and O104:H4 serotype - ISO TS 13136:2012 EURL-VTEC Method 04_Rev 2, EURL-VTEC Method 10_Rev 0 (LNRVTEC53.0n internal method)

Non accredited methods

  • detection of O157 Escherichia coli in stool samples (enrichment by immuno-magnetic separation)
  • detection of free Shiga toxin in fecal extracts (LNRVTEC07)
  • serological diagnosis of STEC infection: screening for E. coli O157, O26, O103, O111, O145 anti-LPS antibodies (LNRVTEC06 ELISA method)

For further documentation on the determination and typing methods of STEC strains, refer to the "Laboratory methods” section of the EURL-VTEC website.
