Neurodegenerative diseases and dementias

Many neurologic diseases, where nerve cells are damaged, have a significant impact on public health in terms of subjects affected, disabilities, complexity in disease management, and need for treatment.

Often, as in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and prion diseases, the causes and mechanisms of diseases are complex and still pose a challenge for prevention and treatment.

The Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS, the National Institute of Health in Italy) activities aim to promote translating scientific research into prevention, early diagnosis, appropriate therapy, and innovative rehabilitation pathways.
