The ISS is a partner of International Networks that aim to promote cooperation activities on a pan-European scale and offer scientific communities an efficient research and innovation environment.
Since 2008, following the assignment of the Ministry of Health in agreement with the Ministry of Education, University and Research, the ISS has contributed to the design and creation of three major European Research Infrastructures for Health: BBMRI (Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure), EATRIS (European Advanced Translational Research Infrastructure) and ECRIN (European Clinical Research Infrastructure Network).
These Infrastructures are part of the framework defined with the instrument of the European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC), thanks to which the European Commission intends, with the help of the Member States, to develop Infrastructures useful for the improvement of research in specific sectors, not achievable and sustainable by the individual Member State, competitive and able to effectively implement Community research and technological development programs. Currently the ERIC Research Infrastructures already operational and those in establishment are about 25, of which 6 in the biomedical area, 8 in the environmental area, 6 in the social sciences and humanities and 3 in advanced materials, physics and engineering (https://www.esfri.eu/).
The ISS also participates in the European Research Infrastructure ELIXIR (European Life-science Infrastructure for Biological Information) which deals with infrastructures for high-intensity data analysis and which has as its primary objective to support research in the field of "life sciences"(www.elixir-europe.org), and in METROFOOD, a Research Infrastructure created to harmonize scientific research in the field of food quality and safety and promote the metrology for food and nutrition (https://www.metrofood.eu/).
EU-AMRI
EU-AMRI, the European Alliance of Medical Research Infrastructures, is the collaboration between the European research infrastructures BBMRI-ERIC, EATRIS-ERIC, and ECRIN-ERIC. The three research infrastructures work in parallel, providing complementary services to researchers in the field of biomedical sciences and support the development of personalised medicine and new treatments.
EU-AMRI was officially launched during a live broadcast from Brussels on 5 April 2022. This virtual launch event brought together important stakeholders to discuss the European biomedical research landscape, and the needs for larger projects to work with alliances of research infrastructures.
