CASCADE, an excellence network for chemical pollutants research in the food chain.
The Istituto Superiore di Sanità takes part to the CASCADE project, an excellence network aiming at studying the risks linked to incidental exposure to the so-called "endocrine disrupters" of the food chain, through the integration of the activities of several workpackages (WP) in a stable collaboration network. Alberto Mantovani and Francesca Maranghi of the Food Safety and Veterinary Public Health Department, along with the group of the National Institute of Food and Nutrition Research lead by Francesco Branca, operate in the WP n.5 in the field of training activities for European courses on evaluation and risk analysis. The two researchers also took part to the "CASCADE Spring School 2005" which took place in Orvieto. Protagonists of this research field are specific substances which can interfere with nuclear hormone receptors, while CASCADE includes training programmes, structured information on health risk analysis, the diffusion of the information to the Authorities that deal with risk regulation and management, to the scientific community and to the public. The Network is coordinated by Jan-Ake Gustafsson (Karolinska Institutet) and is constituted by 18 WP that comprehend the development of analytical methods, screening tests and biomarkers, as well as different approaches and strategies for endocrine disrupters risk analysis.
