The Health Impact Assessment (HIA)

Back What are the meanings of the general and specific components of the health profile of the population within the health impact assessment procedure?

The population health profile concerns at least the outcomes of mortality and hospitalisation and can be distinguished into a general and a specific component. The general component relates to large groups of diseases which are the same for different territories and populations. The mortality outcome refers to the general mortality (mortality for al diseases) and the groups of all tumours, diseases of the circulatory system, respiratory system, digestive system, and genitourinary system. The hospitalisation outcome refers to all diseases combined (excluding complications of pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium) and the groups of all tumours, diseases of the circulatory system, respiratory system, digestive system, and genitourinary system.
The specific component of the health profile concerns the diseases of a priori interest which are identified in association with the ‘work’ (industrial project) under Health Impact Assessment procedure, with the following criteria:

  1. if they can be associable with the ‘work’ of interest in association with the epidemiological evidence on risk for populations residing close to sources of contamination similar to the one under evaluation
  2. if they can be associable with the contaminants emitted by the ‘work’ of interest both for their toxicological profiles, considering the ‘intrinsic hazard’ and the routes of exposure in the analysed context, and for the etiological epidemiological evidence concerning them
