Accidents in recreational waters: towards an integrated strategy of drowning prevention.

In Italy, the mortality for drowning decreased from about 1200-1300 deaths/year from the early 70s to just under 400 in 2012 (-70%, -90% in children). Some 450 cases/year of hospitalization due to near-drowning can be estimated. No data are available on other accidents than can occur in open and closed recreational waters, the most serious being spinal injury, associated with diving. This report has the aim to provide a contribution to elaborate and implement a national strategy to prevent drowning and more generally accidents in recreational waters, as recommended by the World Health Organization.
