Forty-eight types of food preparations were cooked and/or stored under realistic conditions to perform leaching test of aluminium from pans, kitchen utensils, jars, disposable trays and foil. The exposure to aluminium of the Italian population was estimated for different ages (children, adolescents, adults, elderly) and scenarios (average and high consumer, brand and product loyalty) by combining the released aluminium with food consumption. A questionnaire to know the frequency of use of aluminium food contact materials and articles in Italian families was performed too. From the comparison of the estimated exposure with the Tolerable Weekly Intake it was observed that the exposure to aluminium leached from disposable articles modestly contributes to the increase of aluminium intake from foods, with respect to the intake from pans and utensils, among which broth consumption is one of the main source of exposure especially for children.
