Handbook for evaluation of HIV/AIDS communication.
Edited by Anna De Santi, Pierluigi Morosini and Margherita Teodori for the Working group CARE AIDS
2008, iv, 88 p. (in Italian)

The volume addresses the self-assessment of communication skills by health professionals dealing with HIV/AIDS patients, and aims at exploring in depth the relational and communication implications at various stages of the disease, providing a simple outline of procedures suited to guarantee a constructive atmosphere and a good interaction. The document is composed of two parts. The first part includes 24 frames dealing with issues identified as fundamental in the context of communication and its organization aspects during different stages of the infection. Each frame starts with a stated purpose (expected outcome of communication with patients and their relatives) and includes 5 to 25 specific criteria followed, when appropriate, by examples (sentences or clarifying statements). The second part includes reports on specific issues related to communication and counselling, and a brief description of different techniques for the psychological support to patients and caregivers. The high degree of specificity and usability makes the handbook an important tool to support the training of professionals involved in HIV/AIDS management.
