The Italian translation of the EURACHEM/CITAC Guide Quantifying uncertainty in analytical measurement", carried out by a joint working group between the Istituto di Metrologia G. Colonnetti and the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (the Italian National Institute of Health), is presented. The evaluation of the measurement uncertainty is necessary to define the level of confidence that can be placed in a measurement result and it is a requisite for the accreditation of testing, calibration (ISO/IEC 17025:1999) and medical (ISO 15189:2003) laboratories. The Guide describes the formal principles for the estimate of measurement uncertainty in analytical chemistry and gives numerous practical examples of their application. Furthermore, it provides explicitly for the use of validation and related data in the construction of uncertainty estimates in full compliance with the ISO Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement.
