Alcohol numbers
Diseases
Every year in Italy alcohol consumption causes 10 % of all diseases, 10 % of cancers, 63 % of cirrhosis of the liver, 41 % of homicides, 45 % of car accidents, 9 % of disability and chronic pathologies. In Europe one teenager out of four aged 15 to 29 dies of alcohol abuse consequences, the first risk factor for disability, premature mortality and chronic diseases among young Europeans.
Admissions
About 10 % of all admissions is due to alcohol abuse, in 2000 this number reached 326.000 admissions.
Deaths
Every year in Italy about 40.000 persons die of cirrhosis of the liver, cancer, hemorrhagic heart attack, suicides, abortion, homicides, accidents at the working place or at home and car accidents. About 2000 young people die every year in a car accident caused by alcohol abuse.
Disability
About 6,8 % of all disabilities recorded in one year is due to alcohol (Lancet, 2005 and WHO, 2005). In Europe and in the 25 member States this number reaches 7,5 % (Rehm, WHO, 2005). European percentage is second only to the one of the previous Soviet Republics (12,8 %), while the percentage worldwide is 4 %.
Costs
The WHO has estimated that annual health and social costs for alcohol related problems are about 2-5 % of the gross domestic product.
