The implant in patients of urinary catheters is one of the commonest causes of urinary tract infections which, when nosocomially acquired, result in increased morbidity and hospital costs. Among the suggested strategies to control this phenomenon, the updating of knowledge regarding the pathogenesis of these infections as well as the close application of preventive measures and well defined rules for catheter insertion, use and care of catetherized patients are particularly relevant. The protocol for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of catheter-associated urinary tract infections, here proposed, provides a useful tool to face the several aspects of this relevant health issue.
