The stent is an innovative device used for the non-invasive treatment of artery stenosis due to the presence of atheromatous plaques, when a simple angioplasty fails. The stent is described in depth, dwelling upon implantation tecniques and potential hazards to the patient, pointing out the geometrical and mechanical characteristics that stents must have to better perform the scaffolding function of the artery wall. Making reference to coronaric stents, the models existing today on the market are introduced, furnishing their tecnichal data and a critical description of their characteristics. The sperimental models on which reserchers are working in order to overcome some of their intrinsic limitations, are finally presented.
