Radiofrequency radiation and cancer: summary of the scientific evidence.

Radiofrequency radiation (100 kHz-300 GHz) is largely employed in telecommunication and in many other biomedical and industrial applications, with ubiquitous exposures in living and working environments. The possible harmful effects of these exposures, subject of an intense research activity, are also characterized by a high level of risk perception by the public, with the consequent request for exhaustive information. This report, addressed to professionals of the National Health Service and the National System of Environmental Protection Agencies, aims to provide a description of the characteristics of radiofrequency exposure from various sources, and a description of the epidemiological evidence, along with a summary of experimental evidence, on health risks from such exposures. The report focuses on the relationship between the sources of major concern (mobile phones, radio-television antennas, radio base stations, and WLAN/WiFi systems) and on the most feared effects, tumors.
