West Nile: an Italy-Armenia operational workshop to strengthen cooperation

From 30 September to 1 October 2026, the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) of Armenia held an operational workshop with a simulation exercise (SimEx) on West Nile virus disease in Armenia, organized as part of the European Union-funded OneHealthSecure project. The Italian National Institute of Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanità – ISS), which is responsible for coordinating the public health activities of the OneHealthSecure project, supported the organization of the workshop together with the World Health Organization Country Office in Armenia and with the contribution of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Abruzzo e del Molise (IZSAM).

The workshop brought together representatives of Armenian authorities and institutions working across a range of sectors, including public health, human health, veterinary health, virology, entomology, the environment, zoology and economics, with the aim of strengthening multisectoral collaboration on the surveillance, prevention and control of West Nile virus in the country. The programme included an interactive multisectoral exercise conducted from a One Health perspective.

This initiative contributes to the objectives of the OneHealthSecure project by supporting partner countries in strengthening preparedness and response capacities for arboviral diseases through integrated surveillance, cross-sectoral collaboration and the implementation of the One Health approach.
