Law for type 1 diabetes and coeliac disease pediatric screening

Law No. 130 of 15 September 2023, 'Provisions concerning the definition of a diagnostic programme for the detection of type 1 diabetes and coeliac disease in the pediatric population' (OJ General Series No. 226 of 27-09-2023) has provided the implementation of a national screening in the pediatric population for the detection of people at risk of developing type 1 diabetes and coeliac disease. Identifying people at risk allows to recognize clinically asymptomatic cases and make early diagnoses with an improved prognosis. In Italy, according to Ministry of Health there are 300 thousand people suffering from type 1 diabetes, with a constant upward trend in cases over the past decades, and 250 thousand people diagnosed with coeliac disease, with a high proportion of undiagnosed cases because they are asymptomatic. The law also provides the establishment of a National Observatory including expert clinicians and scientists with the aim to monitor the national screening program and to implement information and awareness campaigns.
