Il Progetto D1Ce Screen
Law No. 130 of 15 September 2023, 'Provisions Concerning the Definition of a Diagnostic Programme for the Detection of Type 1 Diabetes and Coeliac Disease in the Pediatric Population', makes Italy the first country in the world to establish a screening programme for type 1 diabetes and coeliac disease. This programme aims to identify, in the healthy pediatric population, individuals at risk of developing one or both of these diseases, so that they can be offered early treatment. These two chronic diseases usually develop during childhood, which is why screening is targeted at children. Scientific research worldwide shows that early diagnosis and intervention greatly reduce both the acute risks and long-term consequences of these diseases in affected individuals.
The Ministry of Health and the Istituto Superiore di Sanità have signed an agreement to implement a preliminary project for the screening programme aimed at assessing the sustainability for the National Health Service, its potential, the organizational challenges and the cost-benefits analysis of a nationwide screening for the two diseases.
