Back Progetto cuore (Project Heart)

Progetto cuore – for the epidemiology and prevention of heart and cerebrovascular diseases – is coordinated by the ISS and was launched in 1998 thanks to the cooperation between four research groups directed by physicians with the same training background (MONICA-Brianza, Marco Ferrario; MONICA-Friuli, Diego Vanuzzo; ATENA, Salvatore Panico; MATISS, Simona Giampaoli) and the financing from the Ministry of Health, with the objective of achieving three goals:

  • establish a population register to monitor cardiovascular events
  • carry out a survey to evaluate the distribution of risk factors, the prevalence of conditions at risk and of cardiovascular diseases among Italy’s adult population
  • evaluate the cardiovascular risk in the Italian population and design risk assessment instruments easy to use in the public health sector

Target:  lower and upper secondary school students and teachers.
Products: health promotion campaign, events, material in paper, digital and multimedia format, the Website, a stand and info point.

Illustrated books, produced through the cooperation between Jeremiah Stamler (world prevention expert) and the Heart Project of the ISS, give a simple and clear explanation on how to stay healthy and active, also “later on in life”. The main character is Mr B.

  • To keep in good health? It doesn’t take much, take Mr B’s word for it. It’s never too late to take care of your health. All it takes is putting a little care in your eating habits and exercise a bit – only a few non-fatiguing exercises – but performed daily, with persistence and a bit of patience. This is the daily routine of Mr B, a friendly middle-aged gentleman who, alarmed by little signs (weight increase, feeling fatigued at any little effort, high blood pressure) and thanks to his doctor’s advice, has decided to take control of the situation by adopting a healthier lifestyle.
