Back Are non-urgent interventions on intersex minors prohibited in Italy?
In general, any unnecessary or non-urgent intervention is prohibited if it is not functional to ensure health. To date, there is no unanimous consensus among Variations of Sex Characteristic (VSCs)/Differences of Sex Development (DSDs) professionals regarding the best time to perform any non-urgent surgical intervention. However, in line with international recommendations, these surgeries should respect human rights, and be postponed until the person can actively participate in the decision-making process. Various international institutions have repeatedly recommended that individual countries adopt necessary measures to protect the human rights of intersex minors. However, to date, only a few (see Malta, Germany, Greece, Portugal) explicitly prohibit such interventions on people with VSCs/DSDs
